"Braids" - pyrography on birch plywood

This picture was done from a photo by David L. Hunsberger taken in the fifties. It shows young Amish girls somewhere around Milverton, Ontario. These elabourate braids are unique to that area. My daughter's grandparents used to live nearby in Milbank, Ontario. When she was young, she used to play with an Amish girl who lived across the street. Sometimes she would come home with her long blonde hair done up exactly like this. Her friend's mother loved to do them both.
