Woodburning as a fine art

Creating a woodburning, in my studio,  back in the eighties

    Through most of the eighties,  I had a studio in St. Jacobs, Ontario, which is a tourist town well known for it's Mennonite heritage. I made my living during this time by creating and selling original woodburnings. These works are also known as pyrography (literally, fire writing). This art form was very popular in the late eighteen hundreds into the early nineteen hundreds. They are first drawn on a wooden panel, then burned on with an electric tool, similar to a soldering iron. (The same tool often sold in hobby woodburning kits to children) I like to think I pushed the boundaries of the craft while I was doing it. At the end of the decade, for various reasons,  I gave it up and switched to painting. I still miss doing them sometimes.
