Experiments in laser reproduction for pyrography CLICK any of the pics for an enlargement The original..."Braids" by Lance Russwurm © 1988 Years ago, when I was a full time pyrographer, I was disappointed that woodburnings did not lend themselves to reproduction. When photographed and printed in the normal lithographic way, they simply look like brown pictures, losing that warmth, texture, and sheen that the originals have. However, technology may finally be providing a method! Above is a photo of my original woodburning, taken in 1988. (I no longer have the original) It is a black and white photo which I have since colourized, so the hue is not accurate. I was contacted by a person who has a laser cutting and engraving machine. I had known these machines to only be capable of either cutting right through the wood or not. (In short...only line cut type pictures would work) Apparently, recent advances in the software that powers the machine enables them to do very subtle halftones. I sent him a high resolution scan (300dpi) from the photo I had of my old woodburning...and these were some of the results. I found the results to be quite nice. While they don't look just like the original....they have their own look, which is very pleasant. You can't see it well in the photos here, but they are textured, rather like a shallow relief carving. They are somewhat lighter than pyrography normally is. The resolution used is typically 1200 dpi...the detail captured is amazing.....
